At 16, Chikondi was the leader of a notorious youth gang in Mzimba town. He was involved in theft, drug use, and violence that terrorized his community. Teachers had given up on him, and his parents were at their wits' end.
When Arise & Shine launched at his school, Chikondi initially mocked the participants. "Bible quizzes? That's for church kids," he'd say with contempt. But one day, after a particularly violent incident, the school principal challenged him: "Chikondi, just read Luke chapter 15. That's all I ask."
The Turning Point
Reluctantly, Chikondi opened his Bible that night. As he read the story of the prodigal son, something shifted in his heart. "I saw myself in that younger son," he recalls. "Wasting my life, hurting my family, but still loved by my Father."
The next week, he joined the Arise & Shine quiz club—not because he wanted to win, but because he wanted to understand more about this God who pursued lost sons like him.
A New Mission
Within three months, Chikondi had memorized the entire book of Luke. His transformation was so dramatic that even his former gang members noticed. "They couldn't believe the change," says Pastor John Mwale, the school principal. "The same boy who led fights was now leading prayer meetings."
Today, at 18, Chikondi leads a youth ministry that reaches other at-risk youth in his community. He has led 12 of his former gang members to Christ and started a community garden project to provide food for vulnerable families.
"The Word of God changed me from the inside out. Now I want to see my whole community transformed," Chikondi says with conviction.
Lessons for the Movement
Chikondi's story demonstrates the power of Scripture to transform even the hardest hearts. It shows that our quiz model isn't just about competition—it's about creating encounters with the living Word that lead to genuine transformation.
His journey from gang leader to ministry leader exemplifies our core objective of leadership development. When we invest in one young person through Bible Quiz Evangelism & Discipleship, we're not just changing their life—we're equipping them to change their entire community.
As we expand our program across Malawi, stories like Chikondi's remind us that no youth is beyond hope. The entrance of God's words truly does give light and understanding, even to those who seem lost in darkness.
