Ekwendeni Community Day Secondary School had long struggled with high dropout rates, teenage pregnancies, and substance abuse among students. The atmosphere was tense, with frequent fights and disciplinary issues dominating daily life.
When the Arise & Shine quiz club started in January 2025, only 12 students attended the first meeting. Head Teacher Mrs. Elizabeth Kamanga was skeptical but willing to give it a try. "We had tried everything else," she admits. "What did we have to lose?"
From 12 to 200
Six months later, over 200 students participate weekly—nearly half the student body. The transformation has been nothing short of miraculous.
"Students now resolve conflicts through prayer and biblical principles," explains Mrs. Kamanga. "Last term, they organized a 'Clean Ekwendeni' campaign that removed trash from the entire town center without any teacher prompting."
The academic impact has been equally impressive. The school has seen a 40% increase in academic performance, with students reporting that scripture memorization has improved their overall memory and concentration skills.
Institutional Transformation
But perhaps most significantly, the spiritual atmosphere has completely changed. What was once a place of tension and conflict is now a hub of revival and discipleship.
Three new churches have been planted in the community as a direct result of student evangelism. Former troublemakers are now leading Bible studies in their neighborhoods. Teachers report that the school environment feels completely different.
"This movement has restored hope to our school and community," says Mrs. Kamanga. "Disciplinary cases have dropped by 60%, and students are showing genuine care for each other."
A Model for Other Schools
The Ekwendeni model demonstrates how Bible Quiz Evangelism & Discipleship can transform not just individual students, but entire institutions. The combination of competitive engagement, scripture mastery, and intentional discipleship creates a powerful catalyst for change.
As we look to expand to other schools across Northern Malawi, Ekwendeni stands as a testament to what's possible when we anchor youth in Scripture and create spaces for them to grow together in faith.
Their journey from crisis to revival offers hope to educators and administrators facing similar challenges. It proves that spiritual awakening among youth can address even the deepest institutional problems.
